DOBSON — A decision regarding the Surry Community College basketball team could be made after the yearly budget has been approved by state officials, school President Dr. Deborah Friedman said.
“As of right now, nothing has changed,” Friedman said regarding the basketball program.
The subject of the hoops squad was not listed on the agenda of the board of trustees’ open session during its monthly meeting Monday.
Friedman said the lack of a budget makes it difficult to make decisions. She added the subject may come up again during the board’s August meeting.
Friedman said the budget should be approved some time in July. A supporter of athletic programs, she said that all talks regarding the basketball program and other school matters have been halted until the budget becomes official.
In a recent interview, former head coach Eddie Wilmoth said the basketball program would be discussed at Monday’s board meeting. However, talks have cooled and will not resume until August at the earliest.
“If there were discussions (regarding the basketball program) prior to (Monday), it was because we were hoping to get more information (about the budget) prior to now,” Friedman said.
Wilmoth, who served as head coach last season before resigning to become an assistant coach, said the future of the team is up in the air. Local players who expressed interest in the program were told the same thing. Athletic Director Mark Tucker declined comment, as did board of trustees Chair Gene Rees.
