A Friday car crash on Interstate 77 near Elkin that killed four members of a family traveling from New York to Alabama has claimed a fifth victim.
Bryan Mowry, 59, of Hickory, died Saturday morning at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center from injuries he received in the wreck.
Mowry was riding in a Toyota Tacoma driven by his wife, Sandra Mowry, traveling in the northbound lane of I-77 when they were struck by a mini-van that had crossed the median from the southbound lane, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Terry Bullington.
The collision collected a third vehicle, a Nissan Altima, driven by Bonnie Weddle, 49, of Dobson.
The van was driven by Wayne Hicks, 44, of Queens, N.Y. Authorities said he fell asleep at the wheel, then the van crossed the median into the oncoming traffic. Hicks, his wife, Natalie Hicks, as well as one son, Wayne Hicks Jr., 10, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their 2-year-old daughter, Natalya Hicks, died later at Baptist.
Saturday, Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said Mowry had died and his wife remained in critical condition. Weddle was treated at Hugh Chatham Memorial and released Friday.
In the aftermath of the crash Shelton said relatives of the Hicks children are working with local authorities to see to the needs of the children. The oldest of the surviving children, 9-year-old Elijah, was not hurt and his brothers, 4-year-old Josiah and 5-year-old John, underwent surgery Friday afternoon.
“As far as I know the children are doing fine,” Shelton said Saturday. “All of the family have made contact and are coordinating with us in taking care of their loved ones.”
The Hicks family was on its way from their home in New York to a family reunion in Alabama when the wreck occurred. Attempts to reach Trooper Bullington for additional information Saturday were unsuccessful.
