Last week, the Elkin City Schools system showed its appreciation to its teachers during national Teacher Appreciation Week 2009, and Teacher Appreciation Day, which was May 5.
In Elkin, as well as across the nation, suggestions and efforts were for students to also become involved in the celebration. Ideas for students ranged from entire classes signing cards thanking teachers to presenting meaningful gifts.
Another suggestion was for students to learn the fundamentals about becoming a teacher.
Each of the three schools paid homage to its teachers.
Elkin Elementary School kicked off its teacher honors by paying tribute at the start of the day on its public address system, WELK. Chocolates, apples and breakfast biscuits were served throughout the week. Because of a conflict, a luncheon event sponsored by the PTA will be held instead on May 21.
At Elkin Middle School, principal Pam Colbert developed a theme of the day, which included anything from snacks to meals, culminating with a steak and potato lunch Friday.
Elkin High School honored its teachers with its JROTC cadets cooking hot dogs and hamburgers on Monday; a luncheon by the PTA on Thursday; and a presentation of gifts — golf umbrellas — Friday.
