Starmount High School’s hunter safety team made the most of its first trip to the state tournament in several years.
The Rams placed third overall in the all-day event, held in Ellerbe on April 25. The rifle team captured first place in its division, while Aaron Evans won the individual rifle title.
“The day was long and hot with a high of 92 degrees. By the end of the day Starmount’s standings were impressive,” head coach Keith Vestal said.
Starmount finished with 2,997 points. Vestal said he was excited not only to place so high but also to beat the defending state champions from Forbush.
Brandon Adams, Andrew Beamon, Valerie Campbell, Bradley Davis, Aaron Evans, Crystal Flinchum, Austin Hutchens, Savanna Stewart, Drew Vestal and Jeremy Wishon comprise Starmount’s hunter safety team. Vestal is assisted by Edward Adams and Dale Ring.
Starmount had a strong showing in the district tournament as well on March 28. The Rams‘ shotgun team placed second with a score of 770, with two team members earning perfect 200 scores. Starmount was fifth overall in the team standings with a tally of 2,902.
That strong showing earned Starmount a bid to the state tournament.
