DOBSON — An up-and-down week concluded for the Surry Central girls soccer team with a 6-1 loss to West Stokes Friday night in a non-conference clash.
Reba Stanley scored the Golden Eagles’ only goal, one which broke a scoreless tie 15 minutes into the game. West Stokes tied the score with one minute remaining in the first half before breaking the game open.
On Monday, the Golden Eagles won a 2-1 overtime thriller against Ashe County and cemented themselves into the third spot in the conference standings, where they remain.
Against the Huskies, Martha Perez scored on a penalty kick in the extra frame to lift her team to the victory. Savanna Snow scored the first goal for Surry Central in that game.
Now, the Golden Eagles try to maintain their standing. They travel to Starmount tonight.
The Eagles’ regular season concludes with a game at Ashe County on Thursday, followed by a non-conference rematch with West Stokes in King on Friday.
Golf NORTHWEST 1A: Golfers Ross Burgess of Elkin and Dakota Goad of East Wilkes earned all-Northwest 1A Conference status and played their way into the upcoming regional tournament.
Burgess led the Buckin’ Elks this season, averaging a nine-hole score of 39.00. He shot rounds of 40 and 40 on the front and back nines at Roaring Gap Golf Club in last week’s conference tournament.
Goad averaged 40.25 per nine holes to lead East Wilkes. He had rounds of 45 and 40 at the conference tournament.
Both Burgess and Goad were top 10 players in the Northwest this season.
Other conference tournament scores for Elkin included Taylor West (84), Jonathan Stroud (94), Tyler Soots (96), Brandon Wiley (97) and Matthew Billing (98). West shot a 39 on the back nine.
Other East Wilkes scores from the conference tournament included Josh Blackburn (82), Joe Wood (84), Devin Cass (86), Austin Stone (93) and Alex Wright (94).
Bishop McGuinness won the Northwest 1A tournament team title, compiling a 309 score. North Stokes and South Stokes tied for second with 325 tallies, followed by Mount Airy 334, East Surry 334, East Wilkes 335, South Stokes 345, Elkin 353 and Alleghany 410.
Jon Montgomery of South Stokes was voted the conference Player of the Year. Bishop, South Stokes, North Stokes and West Wilkes each qualified their teams into the regional tournament.
Track SURRY CENTRAL: A strong day from sophomore Samantha Mosley was not enough to lift host Surry Central into first place of its tri-meet with North Wilkes and North Surry last week.
Mosley’s 31-foot leap in the triple jump was her best of the season and good for first place in the event. Mosley also won the 200-meter dash, the 100 hurdles and finished second in the high jump.
“She had a good day,” Surry Central coach Rex Mitchell said. “She’s been injured and hasn’t been able to train much. For her to get in four events is encouraging. She did that without very much training.”
The Golden Eagles’ Patty Murphy flung the discus a school-record 117 feet, nine inches. Murphy held the previous record, also. Distance runner Rosa Reyes captured the 1,600 and 3,200 and Raven Stanley’s 8 feet, six inch jump earned her the high jump.
“There aren’t many girls in North Carolina jumping that high, so that’s encouraging,” Mitchell said.
The final girls’ standing were as follows: North Wilkes (67 points), Surry Central (56) and North Surry (35).
In the boys’ competition, North Wilkes also won with 83 points, followed by Surry Central (55) and North Surry (21).
