RONDA — East Wilkes’ top doubles team earned a little revenge against Mount Airy on Wednesday afternoon.

But the Cardinals as a whole couldn’t pull off the upset against the top ranked 1A team in the state. As in the first meeting earlier this month, Mount Airy engineered a 6-3 victory.

Ethan Lyon and Houston Callaway teamed to win the top-flight doubles duel against Mount Airy’s Nicholas John and Brooks Mayberry 10-6. John and Mayberry had beaten the East duo 10-3 a few weeks ago.

The Cardinals, trailing 4-2 after singles, needed to win all three doubles matches to eek out the team victory. Mount Airy’s Matt Kessler and Eric Belton halted East’s Taylor Ward and Zan Parks 10-6 at No. 2 doubles. Alex Ilyasov and Chance Hall beat East’s Logan Hemric and Mitchell Welborn 7-5 at No. 3.

The Cardinals’ two singles wins came from Callaway and Ward.

Callaway rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mayberry, a much stronger victory than the three-set match the duo played earlier this month. Ward defeated Hall 6-3, 6-1 — nearly the same score as the first meeting.

Mount Airy’s John beat Lyon in the top flight singles duel 6-1, 6-0. Lyon had pushed John to three sets the first time they played.

East Wilkes bounced back into the win column on Thursday afternoon, topping Surry Central 9-0 to improve to 11-2 overall. The Cardinals are 9-2 in the Northwest 1A Conference.

Lyon defeated reigning Mountain Valley 2A singles champion Kyle Eiswald 6-1, 6-2. Callaway, Ward, Parks, Jeremy Bauguess and Welborn all won singles matches in straight sets.

Welborn was a 6-0, 6-0 winner. Parks and Callaway gave up just two games.

Ward and Bauguess each had 6-0 sets.

The doubles tandems of Callaway-Ward, Parks-Welborn and Chris Deal-Brewer Logan prevailed for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals host Starmount on Monday, visit South Stokes on Tuesday and then host Alleghany on Wednesday.
