SPARTA — Elkin and Alleghany recorded more runs than hits in their Wednesday make-up baseball game.

In the end, the Buckin’ Elks edged the homestanding Trojans 5-4.

Ethan Creed pitched all seven innings for the Elks, striking out 13 and allowing just two hits. All four of Alleghany’s runs were unearned. The Trojans’ first hit didn’t come until the fifth inning, marking a nearly 10-inning streak where Elkin pitcheres silenced Trojan bats (dating back to a March 10 victory at home).

The Elks, meanwhile, only managed three hits for the game. Josh Carter stroked a triple and scored a run. Matt Hinson was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Creed helped his own cause with a hit and an RBI.

David Tilley and Kyle Whitman didn’t have hits but added RBIs to the Elks’ cause.

Elkin improved to 5-5 overall and 5-5 in the Northwest 1A Conference with the win. The game had been scheduled for Tuesday but was moved back a day because of snow in the high country.

The Elks will participate in the Major Larry J. Bauguess Junior Memorial Tournament over the weekend at Wilkes Central. The event will honor a former Wilkes Central baseball player from the 1980s who died in Pakistan while serving in the U.S. military. He had been working with NATO helping conduct a meeting to arbitrate a border dispute between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Elkin will play the host Wilkes Central Eagles in the 7 p.m. game tonight (Friday). The winner will face either Forsyth Country Day or Statesville on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Friday’s losing teams will play each other on Saturday at noon.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Major Larry J. Bauguess Memorial Fund, which will go to scholarships and field improvements at Wilkes Central’s baseball complex.
