MILLERS CREEK - The Rams were unable to conjurer up the same magic they rode to an improbable Mountain Valley Conference Tournament title last season in their postseason opener Wednesday night.

Looking to defend its tournament championship, Starmount’s bats went silent against West Wilkes, falling 7-2 in the first round in the 4-5 matchup.

It was a tale of two games for the Rams against the Blackhawks.

Coming off April’s matchup, when Starmount racked up 14 runs on 12 hits, the Rams bats were quieted by John Bauguess and West Wednesday evening.

Bauguess kept Starmount off balanced, limiting the Rams to just two runs on six hits to power West Wilkes to victory, advancing to Thursday’s semifinals.

Sophomores Caleb West and Sawyer Davis paced Starmount’s offensively on the night.

West brought home both runs in the contest, while Davis collected a pair of hits, including a double. Luke Shore, Jeremy Whitaker and Samuel Stone rounded out the base hits for the Rams.

Tanner Mathis picked up the tough loss on the mound after 4.1 innings of work. The senior allowed seven runs on five hits, while striking out three.

Whitaker and Stone finished off the final two innings for the Rams.

Starmount, who captured the conference’s No. 3 seed in the upcoming 2A state playoffs, waits for its postseason fate when the brackets are released next week.
