Local hero honored with golf tournament
Cameron Kent started the golf tournament Thursday by saying the Lord had blessed the golfers with a beautiful day for the 5th annual Pfc. Adam Lee Marion golf tournament.
Kent, Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson, and Mt. Airy golfer Justin Long were among the local dignitaries who were present to honor Marion.
Marion’s parents Donny and Pam spoke to the crowd assembled in front of the Cedarbrook Country Club clubhouse Thursday and thanked everyone for their support and effort. Donny said the annual event takes months of hard work on so many people’s parts, beginning with meetings in January that run through the April event.
Marion’s parents said the donations made would benefit the Children’s Center of Surry, Inc., an organization close to Adam’s heart.
Cameron Kent recognized the military’s courageous work in allowing the golfers to enjoy the sport on such a beautiful day.
The military color guard and a bagpiper coordinated to present the American flag as ‘Amazing Grace’ played, followed by the bagpiper walking away ceremoniously across the fairways.
Course pro Zim Zimmerman also spoke. The event was said to have drawn two full fields of golfers: 61 teams totaling 244 players, with roughly $55,000 raised.
Golf carts were lined up in front of the clubhouse, with golfers driving off to their respective holes following the opening ceremony. Teams were numbered and had been told to proceed to various holes around the course to allow everyone to play simultaneously.
