The National President of the Jaycees attended the Elkin Jaycees monthly membership meeting April 15.

The group met at Sela Builder’s Meeting Place with Twenty One & Main catering the event.

2013 National President Chrystal Ramsay-Dyess lives in Ocala, Fla. and credits her Jaycee membership for her career and her husband.

She spoke to the group about her unenthusiastic joining of the Florida Jaycees in 2002 to be part of their haunted trail, and how it led to many adventures, accomplishments and friendships over the years.

Ramsay-Dyess recently visited chapters in Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, Georgia and Missouri. From Elkin she will travel to Tennessee and South Carolina before arriving back home in Florida with her husband and 8-year-old son.

She says her career in sales and marketing as a life coach allows her to work from anywhere. She said the experience has been instrumental in enabling her to take on the challenge of the national presidency.

She spoke to the Elkin Jaycees about her decision to visit the Elkin chapter. She said the N.C. Jaycee State President Scott Alexander had bragged about the group. He cited that Elkin had won top honors for donations made in 2012 to the NC Jaycee Burn Center as well as other state awards.

The membership numbers took a dive over the last two decades, causing concern for the chapter’s future. In 2010 past Elkin Jaycee president Joe Walker, now local business owner of AllStar Rentals and a town commissioner, headed up a reorganization effort that has led to the revitalized chapter.

“It was basically like starting a new chapter from the ground up. And who better to do that than Joe Walker?” stated 2001 chapter President Holly Lamm. “He was a past member of the Elkin Jaycees, Local President in 1980-81, State President in 1988-89, is a JCI Senator, a winner of the Clayton Frost Award recognizing the top five state presidents and many other Jaycee accomplishments.”

In 2011 the revitalized chapter moved back to the Charles C. Weaver Memorial Jaycee building, dubbed the “JC Hut,” on Poplar Springs Road with President Daniel Hearn at the helm.

When Brandi Walker Hall assumed in the presidency of the chapter in 2012 the chapter reestablished by-laws, won awards and gained new members.

In 2013 Levi Shore was voted in as local president.

Shore also presented Joyce and Howard Shelton the Distinguished Service Award that night in recognition of their years of service and dedication to the Elkin Jaycees. Their organization is instrumental in putting on the Jaycee’s annual Gospel Sing and their Magic Show allowing them to make significant contributions to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center and Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Elkin Jaycees’ biggest yearly project is the Fourth of July celebration in the Elkin Municipal Park.
