School board honors teachers and students

The Board of Commissioners for Elkin City Schools recognized outstanding faculty members and an art student night at the monthly meeting Monday.
Dr. Randy Bledsoe and Chairman Norman Foley were absent due to a meeting of a national school board convention they were attending.
Adam Beshears, an art teacher at Elkin High, presented Mallie Hutchens’ artwork to the board. She shook hands with the board members before her art was put on display in the ECS Central Office lobby.
Elkin Elementary Principal Tom Caton presented an award to Julie Reed as the Elkin Elementary Teacher of the Year. A Teacher Assistant of the Year award was also given by Caton to Kristy Simmons, also of the elementary school.
Principal Pam Colbert of the middle school honored Emily Morrison with the middle school’s Teacher of the Year Award. Principal Joel Hoyle of the high school presented his award to Kali Teague.
Elkin High Assistant Principal Casey Morrison honored the Bus Driver of the Year, Robert Royall.
The board heard the budget amendments from Jan Zachary, the finance officer for Elkin City Schools.
While usually tasked with telling the board the grim prospects for the budget, Zachary was able to give good news to those present Monday. State revenue for exceptional children, technology, and teacher assistant and custodian salaries came in, although some were more than others.
Revision #26 to the budget involved state revenue of $5,116, teacher assistant salary/benefits of $5,000, and custodian salary/benefits of $116.
Revision #28 gave $6,001 of state revenue, $6,000 to mClass Reading 3D computer equipment, and a single dollar toward “technology.”
Revision #29 gave the exceptional children’s’ program $11,916 of state revenue, $6,370 to teacher assistant salary/benefits, speech assistant salary/benefits got $2,690, and part-time services salary/benefits received $2,856.
The board also heard the first readings of several policy changes, which corrected the wording of several policies for clarity.
