MORAVIAN FALLS - Missed opportunities haunted the Buckin’ Elks Tuesday night in Moravian Falls.

Elkin squandered a scoring chance in the top of the seventh before seeing the Eagles manufacture the game-winning run in the home-half of the frame to escape with the thrilling 5-4 victory.

With the game knotted at 4-4 in the seventh, the Elks loaded the bases with one out looking for the go-ahead run.

Head coach Steve Martin called for a suicide squeeze with Seth Creed at the dish. But Creed was unable to lay down the bunt as Jamey Cranford was caught in a rundown between third and the plate.

Catcher Dillon Adams then fired to first to pick off Bubba Bradley, who strayed too far from the base, as Central turned the ending-inning double play to get out of the jam.

In the next half-inning, Austin Staley smacked a single up the middle to plate the game-winning run to give the Eagles the one-run victory.

Elkin only managed four hits against three Central pitchers, with Bradley, Drew Shinkle, Frank Miller and Seth Haynes recording base hits on the night.

Bradley picked up the hard-luck loss as the Elks wasted a solid performance by starter Calvin Yarboro. The senior threw five strong frames of four-hit ball.

Elkin will look to bounce back tonight against bitter rival Starmount in Boonville. Cranford slugged the Elks to a wild 11-9 victory with a grand slam and walk-off homer in the teams’ last meeting.
