Jonesville Elementary School capped off its three-day Dr. Seuss celebration Wednesday with “Wacky Tacky” day.
On Monday students dressed up as their favorite Seuss book character. Tuesday was crazy sock day, in honor of the story “Fox and Socks.” Wednesday’s tacky day is drawn from the story “Wacky Wednesday” by Dr. Seuss. Throughout the three days Ms. Twila Johnson, the school’s NCWISE Data Manager, read from Dr. Seuss books over the intercom.
She also made her own Seussical verses. She began each announcement with a rhyme, though she could not think of one every time.
Each class selected a winner from its students, and Twila Johnson,
Sheila Johnson, and Principal Kelly Byrd-Johnson judged each of those winners to select a winner for each grade. The three then picked from all the finalists and selected sixth grader Kaitlynn Blackburn as the winner.
Hailey Edwards, Victoria Cline, Alexis Dockery, Elizabeth Ingersall, and Maggie Ray were the runner-ups. Each was able to pick a treat from a prize bucket, and Kaitlynn was given a “Horton Hears a Who” doll and book.
Theodor Seuss Geisel would have been 99 years old this year. Every year schools celebrate his important position in literature and literacy by doing various activities around Mar. 2, his birthday. The date has been adopted as the National Read Across America Day by the National Education Association.
