Makayla Dimmette scored three goals Monday night to lead the Lady Elks to a 6-0 victory over visiting Alleghany.

ELKIN - A young Lady Elks squad bounced back from a humbling 9-0 loss to Surry Central in the season opener with a dominating performance Monday night.

Makayla Dimmette recorded a hat trick to power Elkin (1-1, 1-0) to a convincing 6-0 victory over Alleghany in the Mountain Valley Conference opener.

“It feels good. Our youth definitely showed against Surry Central,” head coach Heath Foster said. “We lost eight starters from last year, so we’re starting three girls who started last year. About half of our starting lineup is first-year players.

“But we did good tonight. We worked on some stuff that we need to against Surry Central - corner kicks, marking our man, stepping to the ball and not stabbing at the ball, and it paid off tonight. We also took some shots,” he added.

Dimmette found the back of the net three times as the Lady Elks scored four goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Deyonna Gonzales got Elkin on the board first just nine minutes into the game before Dimmette put the Elks up 2-0 with a goal at the 25-minute mark.

Katelyn Reece chipped the ball over the keeper less than a minute into the second half to extend the lead out to 3-0.

Dimmette then reeled off two-straight goals - including a header on a cross into the box from Karla Fuentes - to complete the hat trick.

Fuentes added a late goal on a free kick to round out the scoring for the Elks.

“Coming off a 9-0 mercy-rule Friday night was a little rough. But they took it well,” Foster said. “The stuff that beat us at Surry Central was stuff we could work on and fix. It’s nice to come back and win; they enjoyed it. I’ll take it.”

Elkin returns to the field tonight against Bishop McGuinness, weather permitting.

“We’re going to keep working at practice on some things, but I’m just happy to get the win; happy to be .500,” Foster added.
