Jonesville restaurant Southern Belles had to shut down after its restaurant permit was pulled by the Yadkin County Department of Health.
David Dunkin Jr. was issued a transitional permit for Southern Belles located at 442 N. Bridge St. on December 18, 2012.
According to county records, officials pulled his permit on February 4, 2013 after the Town of Jonesville shut off water to the restaurant for an unpaid water bill.
“We have suspended the permit for Southern Belles,” said supervisor Charles P. Wood with the Yadkin County Environmental Health and Health Education unit.
In an interview with The Tribune, Duncan, Jr. indicated experiencing financial hardship.
“We are having cash flow issues,” he said.
When questioned on why the restaurant was closed down, Duncan Jr. passed the phone to his father, restaurant manager David Dunkin, Sr., who said, “The restaurant is being renovated.”
County officials said that Southern Belles will require a full inspection to ensure the restaurant is up to code before a new permit is issued.
According to Nancy Fulp of Yadkin Valley Realty, the property manager for 442 N. Bridge Street, she indicated that the building is up for sale and is listed for $90,000.
When asked if that price comes with a tenant called Southern Belles, Fulp said, “We are proceeding with an eviction of the existing tenant.”
Duncan’s dilemma is not limited to Jonesville. He also has a transitional permit of an eatery in Boonville, and that restaurant was slapped on January 28 by county health officials with several ‘out of compliance’ violations.
According to that Yadkin County Health Department report, some categories listing ‘out-of-compliance’ items included: preventing contamination by hands; potentially hazardous food time/temperature, prevention of food contamination, consumer advisory, and proper use of utensils.
The health department has regulatory oversight over restaurants and inspects facilities by looking for control measures.
The inspector report says an ANSI Required food safety course is needed, gloves are required when handling all ready to eat food items, the barbecue temperature was 118 F and it must be maintained at 135 F, employees are to trim fingernails to prevent hand contamination, and wiping cloths should be stored in container of sanitizer between uses.
For Yadkin County restaurant violations and concerns, Charles P. Wood said, “The Yadkin County Health Department strives to protect and improve the health of all Yadkin County citizens. All restaurant complaints or concerns can be filed by calling the Yadkin County Environmental Health Office at 336-679-4244 during normal business hours.
According to Neal O’Briant, public information officer with the North Carolina Department of Labor, the agency is also investigating complaints received by employees of Southern Belles and Kay’s Cafe.
“The Wage and Hour Bureau is responsible for enforcement of the N.C. Wage and Hour Act,” said O’Briant. “Complaints on wage violations may be filed by calling 919-807-2796.”
