Misty Matthews, an office and tourism manager with the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce, has been named its interim president, according to its board chairman.
Chairman Dr. Randy Bledsoe revealed the executive committee made its decision on Tuesday.
Chamber executives originally met last Thursday to discuss the departure of its current president and CEO, Laurette Leagon, who accepted a position with the Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce. Leagon’s last day at the Yadkin Valley Chamber will be on Feb. 22.
“We wanted to determine what direction we as a chamber wanted to go in during the interim,” said Dr. Bledsoe. “In last week’s meeting, we discussed how we wanted to handle the search and timeline for a new candidate for the position.
“With that, we feel very confident with the work that Misty has done for the chamber,” he said. “In the next few weeks or months that it will take for us to complete a search, Misty is well qualified to handle the business of our chamber and to continue the programs, the activities, and service our business community needs.”
Bledsoe indicated that the decision was unanimous on selecting Matthews as interim president.
“The one thing that all of the board members felt is that we are headed in a right direction, and what we didn’t want was to have a lull in how we are helping our chamber members in performing the duties that are needed in this community,” said Bledsoe.
Matthews began working as the Chamber’s administrative assistant in 2005. She was promoted to office and tourism manager in 2008.
“Matthews brings with her a wealth of experience,” said Laurette Leagon. “Matthews increased Chamber membership 15 percent every year she has worked at the Chamber. She also created successful membership network programs such as the Chamber Ambassador program, the Speed Networking program, the Member of the Month program, the Weekly Member Highlight, member spotlight videos and roundtable events.”
Matthews received the Yadkin Valley Chamber’s distinguished Service Award in 2006. She has also managed more than 100 volunteers during recurring Chamber events and manages six part-time employees at the Jonesville Welcome Center, according to a release.
Chairperson Dr. Randy Bledsoe added that former Mount Airy News reporter Mondee Tilley has taken on the role of administrative assistant.
Misty Matthews is currently on maternity leave until February 23.
