MORAVIAN FALLS - The Starmount wrestling team capped an emotional week on and off the mat with two tough losses to close out the regular season.

Just six days after former wrestler Austin Macemore’s death, the Rams dropped their second-straight heart-breaking decision to West Wilkes Monday night.

Wrestling for the fourth time in six days, Starmount was no match for the Blackhawks, falling 59-12.

Michael Wood, Benton Branch and Garrett Stokes picked up the Rams’ three wins on the night. Stokes blanked his opponent 6-0, while Wood battled to a 3-1 decision. Branch recorded a pin at 160 pounds.

The loss came on the heels of Friday’s emotional defeat to Wilkes Central with the 2A conference title on the line.

Wrestling hours after Macemore’s viewing, the Rams hung around before falling to the Eagles 48-22, as Central earned the only playoff berth from the conference.

Starmount notched five wins against the Eagles, led by Wood’s 32nd victory of the season, a 9-2 decision over Tyler Wagoner. Wood improved to 32-1 on the year.

Marco Fuentes and Devin Alspaugh recorded pins for the Rams, while Ian Fennell and Cody Leonard rounded out the scoring with wins in their respective bouts.

Central head coach Wade Collins kicked off the match with a tribute to Macemore, who knew many of the Eagles through wrestling and soccer in the area.

Starmount finishes the regular season at 5-3.
