Salt spreading started early in Elkin on Friday as Public Works employees tried best to keep up with ice conditions.
Outside of Belk resembled a parking lot that’s similar to what the store looks like after it closes. However, the photo was on Friday at 2 p.m. The ice storm impacted businesses all over Elkin.
Freezing rain and sleet caused the early closing of schools and offices in Elkin and surrounding districts on Friday, while sales at major big box stores crippled due to mother nature.
The weather caused hundreds of wrecks across North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky too, say officials at AAA-Carolina.
“The best thing to do is stay put,” said its website.
The icy weather snarled motorists in Elkin, as well.
“I didn’t dare park in the parking lot,” said Anderson Hammel of State Road who was at the Elkin ABC Store. “It’s nothing but a sheet of ice and the cars are bound to collide. I just want to get home and enjoy dinner and a nice drink with my wife, especially after a week of work.”
Across the road the Belk parking lot resembled a frozen tundra. The lot was practically empty.
Inside, store management opted not to comment on the weather. However, they did indicate that sales were taking a major hit.
Slick roads impacted much of western and central North Carolina and Interstate 77. The Department of Transportation reported traffic moving under 30 mph on much of 77 from Winston-Salem to the North Carolina/Virginia state line.
The storm has caused no deaths, and only scattered power outages have been reported.
Salt trucks were observed trying to keep up with falling sleet.
