ELKIN - After Mother Nature postponed Friday night hoops, area squads will hit the floor tonight in a packed week of action.
Elkin, Starmount, East Wilkes and Forbush will all play three times this week, beginning tonight around the Yadkin Valley.
In make-up games, the Buckin’ Elks will square off with North Wilkes tonight in Hays, while the Rams head to Millers Creek to take on West Wilkes. The Cardinals and Falcons matchup from Friday night will be made up Thursday in East Bend.
Mountain Valley Conference leader Elkin (8-0) then returns to its normal schedule with two pivotal games on their quest for a conference championship.
The Elks welcome defending 1A champ Alleghany to town Tuesday night before heading to reigning league champion and second place Wilkes Central Friday night in Moravian Falls.
Elkin knocked off all three squads in their first meetings in early December, topping the Vikings 52-44 in the conference opener, cruising past the Trojans 59-46 in Sparta and dethroning the Eagles 61-51 at home.
The Lady Elks (0-8) will look to pick up their first win of the season this week in the three matchups. Elkin came close to knocking off Alleghany in their first meeting, falling late in the fourth quarter.
Starmount (2-6), fresh off its second conference win of the season last Tuesday, returns to action Wednesday night after its make-up game with West Wilkes.
The Rams head to Pilot Mountain to take on East Surry in their final non-conference game of the season before hosting Ashe County Friday night. Starmount dropped a 38-36 heart-breaker to the Huskies on December 11.
The Lady Rams (2-6) will be looking to snap a five-game conference losing streak this week. Starmount topped the Blackhawks 53-48 in their league opener in Decemeber before falling to the Huskies in their first matchup.
Prior to Thursday’s make-up tilt with Forbush, the Cardinals (3-5) will take on cross-town rival North Wilkes in Hays Tuesday night. The Vikings cruised past East 59-37 earlier this year.
East then steps out of MVAC play to square off with North Iredell Friday at home in their final non-conference game of the year.
The Lady Cards (4-4) will look to gain ground on unbeaten North Wilkes, who topped East 94-83 earlier this season in a marathon contest.
The Falcons (2-6) will play three conference games in four days this week, starting with a trip up to West Jefferson to take on Ashe County Tuesday night. Forbush then welcomes East and North Wilkes to town on back-to-back nights Thursday and Friday.
The Falcons will look to avenge earlier losses to both Wilkes schools this week. Forbush knocked off the Huskies 63-37 in their first meeting.
The Lady Falcons (4-4) are the hottest team in the league, riding a four-game win streak into the matchups, including handing Wilkes Central its first conference loss in three seasons.
Forbush will be seeking revenge after losing to all three squads earlier in the year.
