The Mount Airy swim team celebrated senior night on Monday during the swim meet against Surry Central and awarded the five seniors on the team, all girls, with flowers.

All five girls are relay team members and are alternates for the regionals, said Mount Airy Head Coach Jay Williams.

The seniors are Erika Metscher, Sarah Schoenborn, Lizzie Pell, Ivy Marion and Catherine Scott.

Williams said he has worked with Metscher for four years and that she has a great positive outlook and is easy to coach. The coach said she is also artistic and has worked very hard to improve her breaststroke. He said Sarah Schoenborn has been one of the team’s most pleasant surprises this year and came into it with a new outlook.

Williams said, “She is willing to try events such as the 500 freestyle, she volunteered for it and did this for the team during the last several meets.” She sets personal bests to improve and will ask to go back for more, Williams said.

The two team captains are Lizzie Pell and Ivy Marion, Williams said.

The coach called Pell a quiet leader and elaborated on the features that have earned her title as senior captain.

“Pell is one of our most improved and consistent swimmers. Her times have consistently dropped and she does what is asked of her with a smile. From a coaching perspective, there are a couple of girls that are what I consider dream swimmers and she is one of them.”

Ivy Marion went through last season and really came back this year and has shown a great desire to improve. She is very much a team player.

Finally, there is Catherine Scott, who was all-conference in the 200 free and went to state last year, said Williams. The coach said she also swims the 500 freestyle and has consistently improved. Williams said Scott will go to regionals in the 200 free this year.

“There is no question that when she gets into the pool, she will give you everything that she has got both as an individual and a team member.”

He added that it has been a joy to coach these senior girls.

“Wherever they go and whatever they do, I expect them to do well,” said Williams.

Last week, Surry Central also celebrated senior night during the meet against East Surry and punctuated the event with the team’s five seniors, all boys, who dove off the boards in unison to celebrate senior night. The five seniors for the Golden Eagles are Luis Flores, John Belcher, Austin Wood, James McCraw and Scott Bowman.
