Technology steers motorists to cheapest Elkin gas stations
Elkin residents are making use of technology to inform residents of the most competitive gas prices in the area.
They’re doing it through crowd sourcing data collection sites like www.gasbuddy.com.
Richard Johnson, 23, of Elkin says finding the nearest location is as simple as a click.
“I went to the site and downloaded the free app,” said Johnson. “Not only do I get a snapshot of nearby gas station prices, but if I find a lower price, I easily report the information to the site so everyone can benefit.”
According to GasBuddy, the company relies on volunteers like Richard to call in.
“After, we have a price validation system that kicks in to interpret the data, compare the information to previous gas prices, and in some cases we communicate with the vendor,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst and spokesperson for the company. “What’s important about our tool is that we find people are really connected and trying to do their best to help people save a bit of money.”
The company claims to be faster with information unlike AAA who they say “buys their gas data from a service and takes about 24-hours to process.
“Gas buddy avoids the service and deals directly with customers in the street,” said DeHaan, “and the service is free.”
According to GasBuddy, Dustin Coupal and Jason Toews launched the site in 2000. Today, ad revenue pays for the website.
The gas tracking team indicated the least expensive gas price for our region was at $3.34 per gallon for regular unleaded with diesel checking in at $3.89 per gallon. The location was CITGO at 623 Austin Traphill Road in Elkin.
Citgo store clerk Renee Bauguess wasn’t surprised.
“We know we take extra steps to offer a competitive price on gas,” said Bauguess.
Bauguess also stated that she and her store colleagues were very familiar with GasBuddy.
“Knowing what other prices are coming in from our area helps us put our price even lower,” she said.
