ELKIN - After a long lay-off for the Christmas holidays, first-place Elkin finally returns to the court tonight.

The Buckin’ Elks, who sit atop the Mountain Valley Conference standings at 5-0 and 8-3 overall, return to action against non-conference powerhouse Surry Central tonight in Dobson riding a seven-game win streak.

Elkin hasn’t played since knocking off rival East Wilkes 67-50 on December 21, while the Golden Eagles split a pair of games at the CFE Shootout at East Surry last week.

Surry Central (6-6 overall and 2-3 in the Northwest Conference) knocked off defending MVAC champion Wilkes Central 71-60 on the second day of the holiday tournament. The Golden Eagles fell to North Wilkes 63-58 in the opening game.

Elkin’s ‘Fab Four’ - consisting of seniors Sam Lane, Frank Miller, Chris Hudspeth and Trey King - will lead the Buckin’ Elks against Surry Central and into the bulk of their MVAC schedule in 2013.

Lane, who recorded his 1,000th career point earlier this season, is averaging a team-high 18 points per game in conference play. Sharpshooter Miller is averaging 13.2 ppg in MVAC action, while King has scored 16 points twice against league foes. Hudspeth facilitates an offense that is averaging a hair under 60 points per game (59.8) in conference play.

The winless Lady Elks return against a tough Surry Central squad tonight in the opening game of the double-header.

Elkin is coming off its best performance of the season, nearly rallying from a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit against rival East Wilkes on December 21. The Cardinals escaped with the 56-47 victory to drop the Elks to 0-11 on the season.

Derek Carter’s team has not been fully healthy since the conference opener against North Wilkes in early December when leader Courtney Beals went down with an ankle injury.

Beals returned against East Wilkes (10 points on the night), but the young squad has not played a full conference game together.

Following the non-conference twinbill against Surry Central, both Elkin squads return home against Ashe County Friday night.
