RONDA - Heading into their final Mountain Valley Conference games of the calendar year, the Buckin’ Elks and Rams are looking to close out 2012 on high notes.

Conference front-runner Elkin travels to Ronda Friday night to take on East Wilkes in The Battle of the County Line, while Starmount heads up to Moravian Falls for a rematch of the football title game with second-place Wilkes Central.

The Elks, who are unbeaten in league play at 4-0 and 7-3 overall, exacted years of revenge in their last three games en route to the top spot in the conference standings.

Elkin first knocked off defending 1A champion Alleghany, who swept the three meetings last year, before besting Wilkes Central for the first time in seven seasons last week. The Elks capped off their improbable run with a convincing 19-point victory over bitter rival Starmount last Friday in the Battle of the Bridge - their first win in the series since 2009.

Elkin will look to continue its strong run through the MVAC Friday against rival East Wilkes. The Cardinals sit at 3-5 on the year and are one of three squads with 2-1 marks in league play.

A much-improved East side, led by senior Avery Wallis, is coming off a big 44-38 victory up the mountain over defending regular season champ Ashe County last Friday.

The Elks swept their neighbors in both games a year ago.

In Moravian Falls, Starmount is looking to pick up its first win of the season in its final tune-up game for a holiday tournament when they take on Wilkes Central Friday night.

The Rams remain the only winless team in the MVAC at 0-5 and 0-3 and are hoping to bounce back from last week’s Battle of the Bridge loss to Elkin.

Central sits in second place in the conference standings at 3-1 and 4-3 overall and is coming off a dismantling of Alleghany their last time out.

While Elkin is not playing in a Christmas tournament, Starmount will suit up next week in the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic next week in Winston-Salem to close out 2012.
