The Town of Elkin purchased the Smith Phillips property at 257 Standard St. in Downtown Elkin in August and is now embarking on the planning and public input stage for development.

The Town purchased the property with the intention of transforming it into a community and visitor attraction space.

The Town will be hosting public planning and input sessions Dec. 11 and Dec. 12 at The Elkin Center, located at 1461 North Bridge St.

“To enhance the feedback and discussion during the December 11th and 12th sessions, we hope people will complete the survey,” said Leslie Schlender, economic development director for the Town of Elkin.

The survey is eight questions long and can be accessed at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X387TCZ.

Sessions will run all day on Dec. 11 and half a day on Dec. 12 and the public is strongly encouraged to attend. The schedule for the planning sessions at The Elkin Center is as follows:

Sign in and meet and greet will begin at 11 a.m. on Dec. 11. Session one will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and will cover key findings in Elkin marketplace surveys and how to engage smart growth and sustainable design.

The second session on the 11th will be from 1:45 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and will allow a community discussion of design ideas. This session will be repeated from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. These forums will be exploring development concepts, building design, site uses and characteristics, access and linkages within the Elkin community.

Both lunch and evening sessions on Dec. 11 are considered crucial sessions, according to Schlender.

Dec. 2 sessions will begin at 10 a.m. and will review the responses gathered in the previous day’s sessions and ways to develop them.

Open House will then be from noon until 1:30 p.m. for people who may not have been able to attend the previous sessions. The Open House will offer individuals to view images, ask questions, share comments and hear a presentation on the workshop at 12:30 p.m.

Laura Gaylord, Elkin’s main street and community manager, said the sessions will provide a conceptual master plan for the site and surrounding areas including downtown Elkin, local parks. She also said the sessions will focus heavily on the Elkin Valley Trails.
