Elkin Funeral Service will hold a candlelight memorial service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

The annual event is a community tradition set aside for families who may have experienced the loss of a loved one over the last year, according to Tim Hodges with Elkin Funeral Service.

“This is a time of year that we open up our center for families to come out and pray in memory of a loved one,” said Hodges.

Beth Hodges, Tim’s wife, counsels families and dedicated her time to coordinate the lighting at the center. Beth Hodges indicated that holidays can be the toughest times for families to cope with the loss of a loved one.

“Joining in prayer and lighting a candle for the loss of a loved one helps families through these tough times,” she said.

During the ceremonial reading of names and candle lighting, the Mountain Valley Hospice Voices will be singing in honor of the memory of those who have passed away.

Chaplain Bill Johnson will lead the prayer service.

“As humans we all have one thing in common,” Johnson said. “Unfortunately, it’s death. However, we come together through prayer and as a community knowing that one day we will be reunited.”

The memorial service begins at 7 p.m. Children are welcomed and all families who wish to honor the loss of a loved one are asked to pre-register by calling 336-526-4460.

Many cultures and communities have some sort of lighting vigil tradition in their religious beliefs, suggesting that the idea that such observances are appealing to many people, regardless as to their religious or cultural background. The idea of the candlelight vigil has also been adopted in some communities to refer to any period of time specifically set aside for contemplation and watchfulness.
