Although many teens dream of being in a band, few actually achieve that goal.

One exception is Time Sawyer, a group of local Elkin musicians who met in high school and have continued to perform in the years since.

Band members Sam Tayloe, lead vocalist, and Houston Norris, who plays banjo, attended Elkin High School, while lead guitarist Kurt Layell and drummer Clay Stirewalt attended Starmount High School. The only band members with previous musical experience are Layell and Stirewalt who played in other small bands with friends in high school.

A love of music and a need to share their meaningful lyrics brought together the band in late 2010. Layell and Tayloe met through a mutual friend in Charlotte, N.C. and collaborated on their songs and lyrics which led to forming the band. Later Stirewalt and Norris joined up to influence the unique sound they were trying to create.

Although their sound can be described as modern bluegrass, the band refuses to claim any particular musical style. Tayloe says, “We really try to leave a genre label off what we do. I think our style reaches into multiple genres.”

Tayloe also mentions the band’s goal to reach fans through the realness and love in their lyrics so people can relate to the music. “When it comes to looking for a record label, we are ultimately more concerned just about people listening and enjoying our music,” says Norris.

They are looking for the best ways to get their music played and plan to achieve that through sheer persistence.

The band is currently working on a new album which has not yet been named, and they are hoping to have sixteen new songs to offer the public.

The band’s upcoming events in October include: The North Carolina Seafood Festival in Morehead City, N.C. on October 5, The Royal Bean in Raleigh, N.C. on October 6, and a local performance at the Reeves Theater on October 20. Tickets for the Reeves Theater showing can be bought at Diana’s Bookstore or at the door before the show.
