BOONVILLE - The high school football season hits the home stretch in Week Nine of action.

With three games remaining, Starmount remains in the driver seat for a fifth-straight Mountain Valley Conference crown.

The Rams took another step towards defending their crown with a dominating 42-3 win over West Wilkes last week to improve to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

Starmount’s vaunted defense continues to be its calling card, holding opponents to less than four points per game. Only one team (Mount Airy in the season opener) scored double-digit points against the Rams, who have pitched three shutouts along the way.

Starmount returns to the field this Friday when they host North Wilkes (3-5, 3-3) looking to stay in control.

In Elkin, two-straight thrilling wins have the Buckin’ Elks right in the thick of the MVAC 1A race.

Trailing by 13 with seven minutes to go against North last Friday, Kody King powered Elkin to a 21-20 Homecoming victory to stay in the hunt.

With the win, the Elks pushed their record to 4-3 on the year and 3-2 in the conference, catapulting over West Wilkes (3-3) to the top 1A spot in the standings in the process. For Elkin, all three MVAC wins have come against 1A opponents - West, North and East Wilkes.

The Elks remain a half-game ahead of West and North, while a full game clear of Alleghany (2-3).

Elkin returns to action when they travel up the mountain to take on the Trojans Friday night in a crucial 1A showdown that would give the Elks a clean sweep of their half of the conference.

In Ronda, the Cardinals will look to bounce back from near upset of Wilkes Central last week when they head down the road to Forbush.

East let a second-quarter slip away as the Eagles escaped with a 21-14 victory.

Now at 1-7 on the year and 1-5 in the conference, the Cards will take on winless Forbush in Week Nine, looking for their second win of the season.

All games around the Yadkin Valley kick off at 7:30 p.m.
