Surry County State Farm Bureau “came to the rescue” for Clarence Edwards and Elkin High School’s horticulture program.
“People talk about hard times for school systems, and an example is that we don’t have funds for some text books,” said Barbara Long, CTE director for Elkin City Schools.
After funds became unavailable for additional texts books, Edwards, Elkin High School’s agriculture teacher, reached out to the Regional Agriculture Education Coordinator, Jerry Davis. “He advised me to contact Farm Bureau to see if they could spare any funds because we had a need,” Edwards said.
Surry County State Farm Bureau came through for Edwards, awarding him with an $1800 donation to be used for his horticulture classes.
“This donation is meant to enhance the development of [Elkin High School’s horticulture program] and help in providing Elkin High School students the best possible opportunity in education,” said Charles Boles of Surry County State Farm.
Edwards plans on purchasing virtual texts books, or CEV multi-media packages, with the money.
“I’m teaching horticulture II for the first time this spring are there are no recommended text books for horticulture II so what I’m using the money on is purchasing CEV- virtual text book,” Edwards said. “You get disks, they have lesson plans, power points, work sheets and videos, so you get more of a technological side verses your average text book.”
Edwards said he is extremely appreciative of State Farm’s support, and is looking forward to the opportunities the new multi-media technology will provide for his horticulture students.
