MOUNT AIRY — As expected, East Wilkes had a tough time against the Bishop McGuinness girls basketball juggernaut in Monday’s Northwest 1A Conference tournament semifinals.

The three-time defending state champions won 70-37 at Mount Airy High School. The Villains built a 28-7 lead in the first quarter and held a 49-16 halftime advantage before cruising home. East Wilkes did win the final quarter, 15-9.

Bishop (22-4) will play the Mount Airy-East Surry winner in Thursday night’s conference title game. The Villains rolled to easy wins against both the Granite Bears and Cardinals from Pilot Mountain during the regular season. Only out-of-state teams have beaten Bishop this season.

Brittany Cox (19 points) and Megan Buckland (14 points) led Bishop in scoring Monday night. Jessie Elmore was East Wilkes’ top scorer with seven points. Anna Litschke and Makayla Sales added five points each for the Cardinals, while Samantha Adams scored four.

Lauren Royal, East’s top scorer through much of the season, was held to a deuce.

East Wilkes (19-6) now will wait for the state playoff brackets to be released over the weekend. The Cardinals, as the No. 4 seed from the Northwest 1A, will go on the road to the No. 2 from the Yadkin Valley Conference in the opening round.

The winner most likely gets to play — gulp — Bishop McGuinness, which will be heavily favored to win its opening round game against the No. 4 team from the Yadkin Valley.
