Elkin's varsity basketball teams suffered home losses to Bishop McGuinness on Monday night.

The Buckin' Elks fell 62-22 in girls action and 54-38 in the boys game. Bishop leads the Northwest 1A Conference in both the boys and girls standings. Both Villain teams are 10-0 in the league.

The Bishop girls, winners of the last three 1A state championships, jumped to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter and held a 37-12 advantage at the break. A 19-3 run in the third quarter put the contest out of reach.

Alli Newman was Elkin's top scorer, recording nine points.

Elkin fell behind 32-12 at halftime in the boys contest but outscored the Villains 26-22 after the break. Big men Chase Mounce (11 points) and Dalton Brewer (10 points) led the Buckin' Elks scoring.

Elkin will play again tonight (Tuesday), visiting Alleghany.

Here are other area hoops matchups set for Tuesday:

• Starmount at Ashe County -- the girls contest features two of the three teams tied for first place in the Mountain Valley 2A Conference.

• Mount Airy at East Wilkes — the Lady Cardinals will try to hold off the Bears for third place in the conference

• North Surry at Surry Central

Surry Central will visit Starmount in a Mountain Valley 2A clash on Wednesday night. That game was originally scheduled for December but was moved because of the Rams' football success.
