BLACKSBURG -- Former Starmount basketball standout Victor Davila scored his first baskets as as collegiate player Monday night.

The Virginia Tech freshman recorded eight points and six rebounds in 18 minutes of work, helping the Hokies beat Mount St. Mary's 62-57 at home. Davila only played two minutes in Tech's season opener Friday against Gardner-Webb, not recording any points or rebounds.

Davila missed his first shot Monday, a jumper with 12:34 left in the opening half. But he was fouled about a minute and a half later and canned two free throws.

During a stretch late in the first half, Davila grabbed an offensive rebound, missed a putback, got yet another rebound and then got fouled on the way back up.

Davila missed a few more shots from the field, including a dunk, before hitting his first two-point bucket with 16:50 left in the game, a putback of a miss by teammate A.J. Vassallo.

The 6-foot-8, 245-pound Davila, who was conference player of the year as a senior at Starmount, finished Monday's game 2-of-6 from the field and 4-of-6 from the line. He grabbed five offensive rebounds and one defensive board. He committed one foul and had two turnovers.

"I think we saw Victor Davila grow up a little bit in front of our eyes and get a glimpse of what potentially he could do," Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg told reporters after the game. "I think he's going to be a very good low-post scorer."

The Hokies left Tuesday for a trip to Puerto Rico for a pre-Thanksgiving tournament. Davila and Vassallo both are from Puerto Rico, with both coming to the United States for high school.

Tech will face Fairfield in its Puerto Rico tournament opener on Thursday.

Davila has generated a nice buzz during the preseason and looks to be the only Hokies freshman with a chance for significant playing time this season.

"He (Davila) is a tough player. He's got a lot of moves and stuff and can score, but he's more of a grind it out big man," sophomore point guard Malcomb Delaney told the Lynchburg News and Advance. "He's going to get rebounds. He's going to try to stop the big man and stuff like that. Eventually he will be a scorer."

Davila will play his first collegiate game in North Carolina on Jan. 4 when Virginia Tech visits Duke. The Hokies play at Wake Forest on Jan. 21.

That contest will put Davila against another player with Yadkin County ties, Wake junior L.D. Williams, who played two years at Forbush before transferring to a prep school in Florida.

Virginia Tech plays North Carolina and NC State just once this season, both in Blacksburg.
