According to Yadkinville Fire Department chief Bryan Southard, the call came in approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday that a trailer filled with refuse had caught fire on the grounds of the Yadkin County landfill located on Sugartown Road. It was no ordinary garbage fire.
"When we got here, the back of the truck was melting," he said.
Southard said the sides of the truck were made of light aluminum and added that it doesn't take much heat to melt aluminum.
However, the flames were of such an intensity that it caused another trailer truck set alongside it to also catch fire.
It took at least four hours to get the fire under control, he said.
"There was so much trash, that much of it lay moldering," he said.
As a result, the fire department was still on the scene at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Due to the intensity of the flames, Southard, as well as Yadkin County Fire Marshal Eddie Weatherman, expressed doubts whether the cause could be determined because very little remained of the trash that was incinerated.
