JV Rams run wild in win over Ashe

BOONVILLE -- Starmount's junior varsity football team continued its pursuit of a conference title, beating Ashe County 48-26 on Thursday night.

The win lifts the Rams to 4-0 in the Mountain Valley 2A Conference and 7-1 overall.

Starmount blitzed out to a 20-6 lead in the opening quarter, getting touchdown runs from Blaine Casstevens of 13 and 15 yards and another from Jac McCracken of 56 yards. Christian Hurt ran in one two-point conversion.

Ashe County pulled within 20-14 but the Rams scored again before halftime on a 20-yard Kyle Weatherman scamper. Hurt's two-point run made the score 28-14.

Ashe County got on the board first in the second half, but the Rams answered with three straight touchdowns to pull away.

Connor Vanhoy plunged in from the 1. Euguene Billips scored on a 28-yard run, while Fondae McDaniel found the end zone on another 28-yard burst. McDaniel ran in one extra point.

McDaniel led the ground attack with 124 yards rushing on 12 carries. Billips added another 127 yards on 10 totes. For the game, Starmount rushed for 492 yards on 46 attempts, an average of more than 10 yards per tote.

The Rams close out the JV season with games against North Surry (away) and North Wilkes (home) tonight (Oct. 30) and next Thursday.
