The first incident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. when Sheriff's Deputy S. Shields stopped Donald Lee Curtis, 25, of 342 Harrison St., Yadkinville, for speeding. Curtis was clocked going 70 mph in a 65 mph zone.
Shields stated that the suspect was very nervous and that his hands shook as he handed the deputy his driver's license. According to the report, Curtis also made several suspicious movements with his hand to his (the suspect's) pants and on the passenger side of thecar.
After initially refusing to exit the car, the suspect complied, which allowed Shields to search the vehicle and the suspect. A small bag of marijuana was found in the left front pocket.
Curtis then put his right hand in his front pocket and and Yadkinville Police Officer Dowell grabbed Curtis' hand. However, Curtis put an object in his mouth and began running.
Shields, Dowell and another sheriff's deputy, Stinson, gave chase. Curtis was located and captured in a creek approximately five miles away.
Curtis was charged with speeding, possession of marijuana and escape from custody or resisting arrest. The amount of marijuana was five grams.
In the second incident, at approximately 9:05 p.m., Sheriff's Office Deputy D. Shore spotted a white Dodge Charger cross the center line on Smithtown Road in East Bend.
When Shore activated his lights, the Charger refused to pull over, which prompted Shore to activate the siren. With that, the operator of the Charger began to accelerate in an attempt to escape. According to the report filed by Deputy Shore, the driver of the Dodge Charger reached speeds of over 90 mph as the vehicle traveled N.C. 67 towards Boonville.
Notified of the pursuit in progress, Boonville police officer Weis lay down stop strips -- a device with spikes that will puncture a tire that passes over it -- but the operator of the Charger ran off the road to successfull avoid running over the strips. The driver then proceeded down U.S. 601 toward Yadkinville before eventually being brought to a halt.
The report filed by Shore did not state how and where the pursuit was concluded. However, the sheriff's deputy did pull his vehicle alongside the driver's side door, and went around to the passenger side door, which was locked. He was assisted by Yadkinville Police officer Penley, who knocked out the passenger side window.
Arrested was Samuel Jerel Freeman, 24, of 1014 Stuart Lane, Boonville. Freeman stated he had fled because he had been driving while his license had been revoked.
Freeman was charged with resisting arrest, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, driving while license revoked, driving left of center, failure to stop, speed.
