GREENSBORO -- Victor Davila finished his high school basketball career in grand style Monday night.
The 6-9 forward, a four-year standout for Starmount, scored 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds for the West squad in the annual N.C. East-West All-Star game at the Greensboro Coliseum. The showcase game was Davila's final prep assignment before joining Virginia Tech's hoops program in the fall.
Davila was one of four ACC signees in the game but the only one on the West squad. Ty Walker (Wake Forest), C.J. Williams (NC State) and Justin Watts (North Carolina) all suited up for the East, which prevailed 99-93.
Bo Ingram of Kinston, who led the East with 24 points, earned game MVP honors. But Davila certainly left an impression, especially for the many in the Starmount contingent who made the drive to see him play.
"This was one of Victor's best games ever," said Starmount alum Deana King, the publisher of www.Starmount
Rams.com and editor of
NCPreps.com. "He seemed like he was out there to make a point to all the naysayers about his ability against tough competition. He went head-to-head with Ty Walker, who is ranked as one of the nation's top centers."
Walker, who admitted to reporters after the game that he wasn't in his best game shape, finished with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The (Wilmington) New Hanover standout also had five rebounds and five blocks.
"Davila had four dunks, including three alley-oops and some impressive baby hook shots over the tall, lanky Walker," King said.
Davila is taking summer school classes at Virginia Tech currently and has already been introduced to the Hokies' strength and conditioning program. Donnie Livengood, Davila's guardian, said he noticed a change in Davila's physique just from the short time he was away in Blacksburg.
Davila used his inside strength to power for several inside baskets in the first half Monday, helping the West forge a 47-47 tie at the break after being behind early. Even though Davila dunked twice to start the fourth period, the West all-stars couldn't keep pace with the East on the scoreboard. The East lead grew to double digits before the West reeled them back in at 87-85 on a three-pointer by Marcus Wright, who is headed to Appalachian State.
A Davila short-range bucket and free throw made the score 94-92 East with less than two minutes remaining. But the West team could get no closer, with the East closing things out at the free throw line.
Davila's name already appears on Virginia Tech's official men's basketball roster, as posted on
HokieSports.com. Gene Swindell, a 6-11 center from Miami, is the only other freshman listed on the roster.
It looks like Davila will get to wear No. 14 for the Hokies, his jersey number while at Starmount.
Davila moved to Yadkin County from Canovanas, Puerto Rico before his freshman year of high school. He played for the varsity Rams all four years, helping carry the 2006-07 team to the 2A state finals. He left the school as the new all-time leading scorer (1.941 points) and rebounder (1,470 boards).
