DEEP CREEK — The driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian in April has been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter.
Kevin Ray Brown, 18, of 2629 Sizemore Rd., Yadkinville, was driving a 1992 Toyota north on Sugartown Road when he struck Matthew Jarznski. According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Brown was in a no-passing zone and traveling more than 80 mph at the time of the accident.
Jarznski, 21, of 1008 J.R. Key Dr., Yadkinville, died at the scene.
Trooper Eddie Stone said that Jarznski and another individual were both walking northbound in the two-lane road. The accident occurred just after midnight Friday near the entrance to the county landfill, north of Yadkinville.
Brown was driving more than 80 mph in a 55 mph zone, Stone said, at the time of the accident. The car left skid marks in the roadway of 342 feet.
The other individual walking with Jarznski was not injured.
Even though Jarznski was walking in the roadway, Brown was speeding and passing in a no-passing zone. Felony involuntary manslaughter is a Class F felony. A person with no previous criminal convictions, if convicted on the charge, could face 10 to 20 months in jail.
Brown is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Yadkin County District Criminal Court.
