Benefit golf tourney at Cedarbrook CC for area Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts of America Phillip D. Thompson F.O.S. golf tournament will be held June 5 at Cedarbrook Country Club.

The event will benefit the youth of Dogwood District in the Old Hickory Council.

The cost is $50 per golfer. The format is four-person captain's choice. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will start at 12, and teams will tee off starting at 1 p.m.

Event organizers are looking for "gold" sponsors ($500) and hole sponsors ($100). Prizes will be given to the top finishers plus for closest to the pin, longest drive and hole-in-one.

Batter up! East Wilkes hosting youth baseball camp

The seventh annual East Wilkes High School youth baseball camp will be held June 16-18.

The camp is open to rising fourth through eighth-graders. Sessions will run from 8 a.m. until noon each day at the East Wilkes Middle School baseball field. Campers will play in groups based on grade.

The pre-registration fee is $40 per camper (until June 15). The cost is $50 for those who register on the first day of the camp.

Each player will be taught basic baseball fundamentals and will receive a camp T-shirt. The Cardinal high school baseball staff will serve as instructors for the camp.

Youth football camp scheduled at East

The sixth annual East Wilkes High School Youth Football Camp has been scheduled for July 28-30.

The three-day camp is designed to prepare players for the Sertoma season. Sessions will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. at the East Wilkes High football field.

Sertoma practice will begin on Thursday, July 31 (keep reading The Tribune for registration information).

The football camp will cost $50 per camper. Pre-registration will run until July 14. Players also can register for the camp when they sign up for Sertoma or the first night of the camp.

East camp will receive a camp T-shirt. The focus of sessions will be on basic football fundamentals and drills, taught by the EWHS football staff.


Forbush soccer team holding yard sale

A yardsale to benefit the Forbush High School boys soccer team will be held May 31 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Unifi Inc.

Items for sale include soccer gear (cleats, balls, shorts, shirts, bags, etc.), other clothes, electronics and more.


Soccer camp coming up in Elkin

Elkin Recreation and Parks and Elkin High School will hold a soccer camp for ages 8-14 from June 23-27. Sessions will run from 9 a.m. until noon.

Elkin High soccer coach Joe McCulloch (USSF D License) and members of the Elkin men's and women's soccer teams will conduct the camp. Cost is $50 and will include a camp T-shirt.

Participants should bring a water bottle, shin guards, cleats and indoor shoes (in case of rain). For more information, call 835-9814.

The emphasis will be on teaching individual fundamentals (passing, dribbling, shooting and ball-handling) and instruction to improve technical and positional skills (keepers, backs, midfielders and forwards). Sessions will include small-sided play and full-sided matches.


Cardinal basketball camp coming in June

The annual Cardinal Basketball Camp will be held at the East Wilkes Middle School gym on June 23-26.

Sessions are open to boys in grades 3-8 (excluding rising freshmen) and will run from 8 a.m. until noon. The camp director is Justin Call, head coach at East Wilkes High School.

Each camper will receive a T-shirt. Lunch will be provided to campers on Thursday, June 26. Prizes will be awarded daily. There will be guest speakers.

The cost is $60 for those who pre-register (deadline is June 1) and $70 at the door.

The camp is designed to improve skills, fundamentals, knowledge and enjoyment of basketball. For more information, contact Call at 835-4772.


5K race in Ronda this Saturday

The EWHS Athletic Booster Club will sponsor a 5K road race/walk on Saturday, May 24 beginning at 9 a.m. at East Wilkes Middle School.

Registration is $25 on the day of race from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Free T-shirts will be given to entrants as long as they last.

Awards will be give to the top three male and female overall and top three in 14 different age groups. Call Anita Tharpe at 835-4772 for more information.


Play golf and help families in need

Yadkin Christian Ministries will hold a benefit golf tournament-marathon at Yadkin Country Club on May 22.

Teams can play as many holes as possible from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The suggested donation entry fee is $50, and each player is asked to raise other donations as well.

Yadkin Christian Ministries' goal is to raise $8,000 in all, which will be used to assist families in need.

In April, YCM assisted 353 families -- about 25 more than they've ever helped before. The ministry gave out 1,490 bags of food, a value estimated at around $22,350, plus additional funds to help families with electricity, medicine, rent and water bills.

A steak dinner with all the trimmings will follow the golf. Door prizes will be given out and every player will receive a goody bag and golf shirt.

Upward basketball camp coming in July

An Upward basketball camp will be held at Elkin Valley Baptist Church on July 10-12.

Sessions will run from 9 a.m. until noon each day. The cost is $30. The camp is limited to the first 60 players to sign up.

Elkin Valley's Upward basketball league featured 200 basketball players and cheerleaders this past winter. Elkin Valley also organizes Upward football in the fall and is planning to launch Upward soccer in spring 2009.


Fishing tournament

The 5th Annual Blue Ridge Bass Anglers night fishing tournament will be held June 7 at Lake Hickory (Whittenburg landing) from 6pm-2am.

Flag football action will return for East Wilkes' youngsters

For the third consecutive year, East Wilkes High School Athletics will be offering a fall season of flag football to all first and second graders (boys and girls).

A representative will be visiting each feeder school with information and registration forms. All eight games will be played at the East Wilkes High School football stadium. For more information, contact Michael Gregory at (336) 428-1290.


Baseball camp in North Wilkesboro

The Frank Pait Baseball Camp will be held June 23-26 at Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro.

The overall skills camp for ages 6-11 will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The overall skills camp for ages 12-16 will run from 1-4 p.m.

The cost is $80. Each session is limited to 75 campers, who must be pre-registered by June 16. Registration forms and more information are available by calling Frank Pait at (828) 324-2876.


East Coast Basketball Camp

Two sessions of the East Coast Basketball Camp have been scheduled at West Stokes High School for June 16-20 and June 23-27.

The camps will be directed by Dan Spainhour. Boys and girls ages 8-18 are invited to participate. Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Tuition is $150 for one week session or $225 for both sessions.

Elkin football T-shirts on sale at Plums

Plums in downtown Elkin is once again selling Elkin football T-shirts.

The cost is $12, and all proceeds go back to the Buckin' Elks football program.
