An electrical problem is believed to be the cause of a fire that damaged two apartments and the Boonville Antique Mall early Sunday morning.

Residents of the two downtown apartments will not be able to return home until something is done about the power situation, Boonvile Fire Department's, Lt. Randy Renegar, said Sunday afternoon.

Rex Baity, part owner of the antique mall, said that it will likely be a week before any part of the business can reopen. Another section of the building may be out of commission for several weeks.

The report of the fire came in to central dispatch around midnight, Renegar said. He did not know who called it in. No one was at home when the blaze occurred.

The resident of the apartment most heavily damaged was about to go to bed when a friend called. "She wanted her to run to Elkin and do something or she would have been home when it happened," Renegar said.

Sunday morning, scorched paint was visible above the window of the rear upstairs apartment where the blaze originated.

Baity said that there was some smoke damage throughout the lower floor of the building and considerable water damage in the two-story section of the structure.

Baity and his mother, Dot, have an antique sales booth within the building and rent out booth space to other retailers. The building is owned by Benny Steelman.

Vendors with goods inside came by Sunday morning to check out the damage. Most found little apparent damage other than smokiness and some water damage.

Joyce Boyles, a vendor from King said she was most concerned about the textile products like quilts and crocheted items, she and her partner had for sale. "I'm worried about getting the smoke out of that."

There will be lots of clean up, Baity said.

Yadkinville Fire Department responded with its ladder truck, and the Fall Creek Fire Department also assisted. On hand the offer aid were the Yadkin County Rescue Squad and Yadkin County EMS. Officials closed N.C. 67 in front of the store for a time.
