Starmount's boys basketball team got a big game from its big man and plenty of production from its supporting cast to beat Wilkes Central 60-49 on Friday night.
Victor Davila, the Rams' 6-foot-9 centerpiece, scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Several of the senior's buckets came via crowd-pleasing dunks, including an alley-oop slam set up by a nice pass from point guard Antonio McClelland to finish off the scoring.
It was one of the Rams' most complete efforts of the season. Freshman forward Jake Barr added 11 points, while Shane Bryant scored 10, Chris Cowles 9 and Cody Spicer 7. Coaches praised Bryant for drawing four charges.
Starmount improved to 7-7 overall and 4-1 in the Mountain Valley 2A Conference, staying within a half-game of league leading North Surry, which beat North Wilkes on Friday to improve to 5-1.
Wilkes Central, an athletic team that likes to go inside, gained the early upper hand Friday night, building a 15-11 lead. But the Rams surged in the second quarter to overtake the Eagles 29-24 by halftime.
Starmount landed the knockout punch to start the third quarter. Barr hit a layup, then Cowles swished a three-pointer. On Wilkes Central's next possession, Bryant stole the ball, pushed it ahead to Cowles, who then fed Davila for a rim-rocking slam.
Wilkes Central called timeout down 38-24, but the Rams kept building its lead, eventually getting out to a 42-25 cushion.
The Eagles got as close as 12 points, trailing 46-34 late in the third quarter, but the Rams went on a 12-4 run from there. The biggest lead was reached at 58-38 and again at 60-40.
Wilkes Central (9-8, 3-2 MVAC) scored the final nine points against Starmount reserves in what was otherwise a lopsided second half. The Eagles' top scorer, Roddie Bridges, finished with 12 points.
Girls Basketball
WILKES CENTRAL 68, STARMOUNT 51: The Eagles broke away in the third quarter, and the Rams couldn't catch them in the fourth despite scoring 20 points.
Wilkes Central outscored Starmount 19-8 coming out of the halftime break after building a 27-23 lead before intermission. Laura Beth Prevette and Brittney Thomas both scored 16 points for the Eagles (6-12, 3-2 MVAC). Alisha Whittington added another 15 points.
Starmount dropped to 1-4 in conference play, 6-9 overall. Mary Katherine Taylor led the Rams' score sheet with 13 points. Taylor Doss added 11 points, while Jordan Raye scored nine points.
