Christian Harris reached the 150-win plateau with his 8-1 showing in the Friday and Saturday showcase, which featured nine other schools participating in a round-robin format.
The next time Harris wins, he'll surpass Josh Fleshman, who posted a 150-17 record from 2000-04. That could come this week, as the Falcons are slated to wrestle Mount Tabor on Thursday and will compete in the T.W. Andrews Duals over the weekend.
Harris, currently the No. 3 ranked 1A/2A wrestler in the state at 171 pounds, suffered his only loss at the hands of the current No. 1. Surry Central's Jed Martin used a takedown just before the final whistle to slip past Harris 4-2 in one of the final bouts of Saturday's session.
"It was a great match between two outstanding men," Forbush coach Jamie Kota said. "The score was tied 2-2, and Harris tried a double but got caught in a front headlock. Both jockeyed for position, with Martin scooting behind for a takedown with three seconds left."
Forbush finished third overall in its own tournament, winning seven of nine duals. Though Harris lost to Surry Central's Martin, the Falcons beat the Golden Eagles overall 44-30.
Forbush's other victims included Maiden 54-30, East Wilkes 57-21, South Stokes 40-39, Reagan 47-36, Mount Airy 78-6 and Wilkes Central 42-9.
Hibriten won the tournament, sweeping through with a perfect 9-0 record. The 2A Panthers beat Forbush 52-21.
North Surry finished in second place at 7-2, losing to Hibriten and Wilkes Central. The Greyhounds beat Forbush 51-24.
Since North Surry, Wilkes Central and Surry Central compete in the Falcons' conference, Kota and his grapplers got a nice preview of the upcoming Mountain Valley 2A season.
"It looks to be another close race in the MVAC again this year," Kota said.
Harris, who pinned six of his opponents, wasn't the only Forbush grappler enjoying a solid weekend. Austin Groce (140 and 145 pounds), Mike Lawson (160, 171 pounds) and Brett Baity (145, 152 pounds) each posted 7-2 marks. Lawson pinned five of his foes, while Groce and Baity had three pins each.
Jacob Johnson went 6-2 with five pins at 112 and 119 pounds. Heavyweight Josh Howard wrangled six wins in nine matches, recording five pins.
David Craig went 6-3 at 135 and 140 pounds, with three pins. Blake Hicks (103) and Dillon Dunn (130) each had four victories during the tournament.
Forbush will stay busy during the holiday break. In addition to matches this week and weekend, the varsity will compete in the Hopewell New Year's Brawl on Saturday, Dec. 29. The JV Falcons will hit the mats at an invitational at R.J. Reynolds that same day.
The Mountain Valley 2A dual-team conference schedule begins Friday, Jan. 4. The Falcons open at home against Wilkes Central. North Surry visits Forbush on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Falcons won the conference regular season championship in 2006, the school's sixth league title in wrestling since 1971. But North Wilkes upstaged them in the MVAC tournament in '06. Forbush won conference tournament titles in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.
