It's looking like Starmount and Forbush will finish 1-2 in the Mountain Valley 2A volleyball standings once again.

The Rams clinched the regular season championship with recent league wins over Wilkes Central (3-0 last Thursday) and Ashe County (3-0 on Tuesday).

The Falcons forged a tie for second place by knocking off North Surry last Thursday. Both Forbush and North have three conference losses going into the final night of the regular season, but the Greyhounds must contend with the Rams tonight (Thursday). The Falcons play at Surry Central.

Starmount and Forbush tied for the MVAC regular season title a year ago and seem on a possible collision course in the MVAC tournament, which starts next week.

Jana Matthews had 16 kills and Meme Brown added 12 in Starmount's 25-7, 25-15, 25-21 win at Ashe County. Jordan Raye added eight kills to go with her 37 assists. Taylor Doss had seven kills and three blocks. Brown led the Rams with six blocks. Katie Jerome blocked four. Matthews, Doss and Mary Katherine Taylor served up three aces apiece.

Starmount picked up a non-conference victory Monday night, beating 4A Davie County at home 25-8, 25-13, 25-18. Matthews (13 kills), Doss (11 kills, 7 blocks) and Brown (10 kills, 4 blocks) led the attack. Raye had 29 assists and six kills. Brown served up four aces. Matthews had 17 digs during her time in the back row.

Jerome blocked four Ashe hits. The Rams improved to 23-3.

The MVAC tournament will begin Monday with first-round matches at the higher seed. Forbush will hold a two or three seed, depending on Thursday's results, therefore hosting either North Wilkes, Ashe County or Wilkes Central. Starmount, as the one seed, will get a bye.

The semifinals will be Wednesday at Starmount, and the championship game will be Thursday at Starmount.
