School officials to crack down on unattended animals

HAMPTONVILLE -- Complaints about unattended pit bulls at West Yadkin Elementary prompted school officials to seek restrictions.

At the Sept. 17 Yadkin County Board of Commissioners meeting, Grady Draughn told commissioners he was concerned about a pair of pit bulls without leashes he witnessed walking around the school's soccer field during his granddaughter's practice. He said unleashed pets on school grounds could bring harm to students, and he wanted to see action taken before something happened.

Yadkin County Superintendent James Benfield was at the meeting and listened to Draughn.

"We do have a problem," Benfield said Tuesday.

He said investigating the matter further proved that three dogs were actually roaming the school grounds. The school board doesn’
