Fire razed a vacant house located at 165 Robert Burris Road, off Rockford Road late Saturday night - early Sunday morning.

According to Surry County Fire Marshal Doug Jones, the house, which has been unoccupied approximately five years, was a rental property owned by two brothers, Harold M. Burris and Robert T. Burris.

In Jones’ opinion, the house had obviously been burning for some time, and that he was suspicious of its origin.

“Houses don’t sit (vacant) for years and then set itself on fire,” he said.

Jones added the house was not a landmark.

“(It’s) not a historical structure,” he said. “It was up the road from the historic village (of Rockford).”
