ELKIN — The Mount Airy girls downed Elkin Friday, defeating the Buckin’ Elks handily, 41-22.

The Granite Bears turned the ball over only 8 times in the game, and used a strong defensive performance to offset a relatively poor shooting night.

Mount Airy coach Howard Mayo said he was pleased with the Bears defensive effort but said he thinks his teams needs to work to knock down easy shots.

We played really well defensively,” Mayo said. “To keep someone to 22 points you’ve got to be pleased but we missed a lot of makeable shots that we have to get better at. But it was a conference win so we will definitely take it.”

Mayo said the team will know more about Hiatt’s condition sometime next week, but added that he feels comfortable with the ability of the Bears remaining players to not hurt for a solid ball handler.

Seniors Maggie McKee (12 points) and Ellie Case (11 points) led the Bears offensively, followed by Andria Leonard with 8.

Jordan Eldridge had 13 to lead Elkin in the loss.
