Two were 1-point overtime victories for the Buckin' Elks, while three others were decided by seven points or less.
Friday's first-round playoff contest against South Davidson certainly didn't fit into that category. Elkin had this one well in hand by halftime, building a 28-0 lead and cruising to a 48-0 triumph.
Junior tailback Jamie Anthony rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns. The second-seeded Buckin' Elks amassed 401 rushing yards in all, getting two more scores from freshman tailback Jermaine Hayes, a late-season junior varsity call-up.
Senior quarterback Russell Stewart threw a touchdown pass in the opening half and rushed for a score after the break. Stewart also booted six of seven extra-point attempts.
Elkin (10-2) now advances to the second round of the 1A playoffs, where familiar post-season foe Hobbton (8-4) awaits this Friday. South Davidson's season ends at 3-9.
"I think it was a pretty good team effort," Elkin coach Richard Grissom said afterward. "We're getting better, and I think we'll keep getting better."
South Davidson coach Marty Collinson was a little more blunt with his post-game comments.
"We got our butts handed to us by a team that was physically stronger and faster," he said. "It's plain and simple. I told the kids in that huddle after the game that if we want to get better, we have to get in the weight room and get stronger."
Things started on a promising note for the visiting team from Denton, the No. 15 seed in the 1A West. The Wildcats took the opening kickoff and marched from their 20 to as far as the Elkin 38, picking up a few first downs. But the drive stalled, and South was unable to convert a fake punt on fourth-and-five.
A pass to Drew Hill fell just out of reach for what would have been first down yardage.
"We missed that fourth down conversion by about three quarters of an inch," Collinson said. "That's a big play in the game. I told them execution was going to be big for us. We had to make plays and we didn't do it tonight.
"We put in about six fake punts this week, and we didn't use but one of them. If we got outside the 45-yard line I was planning on faking every punt I could. We've pretty much done that all year. But the thing is situations didn't really arise for us to use any of them. We were deep in the hole."
After stopping the Wildcats' fake punt try, Elkin needed just six plays to take the ball 58 yards in the other direction for its first touchdown. Jermaine Hayes, filling in at tailback for his brother Trey, who missed the game with an ankle injury, basically jogged the last 10 yards of a 33-yard run to the end zone.
South Davidson went backwards on its next two possessions, gained just one yard on the following series and then threw an interception. By that point, the Elks had scored twice more, once on a 3-yard Stewart-to-Damon Smith slant pass and then on a 9-yard run by Anthony.
The Wildcats' lone highlight of the half came on a 36-yard run by Hill to the Elkin 15. But one play later, sophomore Jordan Tanner of the Buckin' Elks recovered a South fumble to end the threat. The Wildcats wouldn't get near the end zone the rest of the night.
South had a tough time slowing Elkin's run game all four quarters. Hayes finished with 71 yards on 10 carries. Sophomore Luke Martin, a recent JV call-up filling in for a pair of injured fullbacks, managed 58 yards on four second-half carries. Donovan Smith, another JV regular, added another 43 yards on two totes.
Anthony, who has solidified himself as the lead tailback in recent weeks, put the Elks up by four touchdowns right before the half, scoring on a 13-yard run with 31.6 ticks left.
Stewart intercepted a pass one play later and ran the ball to the South Davidson 36. But a couple of passes to the end zone fell incomplete, and the clock ran out on the half.
Anthony started the third quarter by reeling off a 51-yard run after the kickoff. Hayes then powered 14 yards to the South 2. A flag pushed Elkin back to the 8, but Anthony just added the extra yardage to his stat tally, galloping for the score on the next play through the middle of the South defense.
Stewart scamped for a 20-yard touchdown with 3:41 remaining in the period, but the PAT failed, leaving the score 41-0. Hayes notched the final touchdown of the night with an 11-yard run over the left side with 9:17 remaining in the game.
"We didn't really want these guys to have the ball as much as they did," Collinson said. "But they were solid at what they do -- well-coached -- and we didn't tackle real well tonight."
Both teams had problems hanging onto the ball during a misty, foggy first half. During one sequence in the second quarter, Elkin fumbled, then two plays later Justin Strickland of the Elks picked off a pass. Elkin fumbled again on the next snap, then three plays later South gave it back with a fumble. Tanner covered up his second fumble of the night on the Wildcats' next possession.
Michael Jordan intercepted a pass for Elkin late in the game, helping preserve the shutout. South Davidson finished with just 109 yards of total offense, 90 of that on the ground and just 19 through the air.
Hobbton has been a familiar playoff opponent for the Elks during their recent run to four state championships (2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006). Elkin beat Hobbton 49-24 in the 1A quarterfinals on the day after Thanksgiving in 2006.
Hobbton beat Hayesville 27-19 this past Friday to set up yet another meeting. Friday's winner will face either Robbinsville (11-1) or North Duplin (6-6) in the 1A quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 28.
Mount Airy, the No. 1 seed from the 1A bracket, beat Chatham Central 75-0 in its playoff opener. The Bears are the overwhelming favorite to win the 1A state championship this year. If Elkin wins twice more, it will most likely see the Bears, playing for the 1A West title.
But Grissom isn't too concerned about that now.
"I love to see the Northwest Conference do real well but there is nothing I can do about how well they do," he said. "I just worry about our kids. I only worry about us in the playoffs."
