Elkin and Starmount both advanced through the first round of the state football playoffs, earning impressive victories on a foggy, misty night in the Yadkin Valley.

The Buckin' Elks drilled South Davidson 48-0 to advance in the 1A brackets. The Rams rallied to beat Maiden 49-28 to move on in the 2A post-season.

Both will get to play at home again next Friday. Elkin will host Hobbton, while Starmount will welcome West Davidson for a rematch of an early-season non-conference clash.

The lead storyline for both the Elks and Rams on Friday night -- unstoppable run games. Elkin rushed for 401 yards against South Davidson. Jamie Anthony finished with 169 yards on 17 carries and scored three times. Jermaine Hayes added two more touchdowns.

Starmount's Rashaun Gaither amassed an amazing 254 yards on the ground against Maiden, scoring a whopping six touchdowns. He also hauled in 67 yards worth of receptions.

The East Wilkes-Thomasville playoff game was postponed until Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Read Monday's Tribune and check back at www.elkintribune.com for stories and photos from Friday's playoff action.
