When it rains, it pours ... on Fridays.

For the second time in three weeks, soggy conditions forced the postponement of a lot of high school football action in the area. Most contests are being made up tonight.

Elkin will head to South Stokes this evening for a 7 p.m. kickoff. This could be the last football-related trip to Walnut Cove for a long time because the Sauras are moving up to 2A next year and out of the Buckin' Elks conference.

Elkin (6-1, 4-0 Northwest 1A) will be the heavy favorite tonight against a team (1-7, 0-5) that has scored fewer than 100 points in its first eight games.

The extra couple of days rest also should help Elkin players heal up from nagging injuries, though it will be a quick turnaround from tonight to Friday's home game against Alleghany.

Surry Central will play its Mountain Valley 2A game against Wilkes Central tonight as well. The Golden Eagles are still searching for their first victory, sporting an 0-7 overall record, 0-2 in the conference. Wilkes Central sits at 4-3, 1-1.

Starmount and East Wilkes were scheduled to have this past Friday night off. The Rams will play a huge game -- possibly for the MVAC championship -- this Friday at Ashe County. East Wilkes will be at home against South Stokes.

Forbush did play Friday night, losing to Ashe 14-3 in sloppy conditions. West Wilkes beat Alleghany 6-0. East Surry drubbed North Stokes 35-8 in a Saturday night make-up game.

Other contests slated for tonight include Bishop McGuinness at Mount Airy and North Surry at North Wilkes.

Surry Central coach Monty Southern said his school ruled out a Saturday night make-up game because youth teams had contests scheduled for the high school stadium that night. Field conditions were just too poor to give it a go Friday.

"We really wanted to play," Southern told The Mount Airy News. "I've always said high school football is meant to be played on Friday.

"Our athletic director Mark Snow and I walked down to the field about 1 p.m. and it was in a lot worse shape than I thought it was going to be. We felt like it wasn't worth it to try to play it. If it was the last game of the season, maybe. But when you look at everything else going on, there has been too much time and money to thrown into it to throw it away on one game."
