Kathryn Anne Bockman, 24, of 2824 Wheat St., Columbia, S.C., was declared dead following a one-car accident on Interstate 77 at the mile 89 marker, near Dobson.
Bockman was traveling northbound on I-77 when her 2005 Toyota left the roadway and struck a tree on the driver's side. The accident happened just after 10 a.m.
According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Rex Carter, the investigating officer, he believed Brockman's car may have hydroplaned, which contributed to the vehicle sliding off the interstate and struck a tree, where she died. Carter said Bockman was wearing a seatbelt. He added no witnesses were known or had come forth.
He said she was on the way to see her fiance in Virginia when the crash happened. Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton Shelton said the car was full of groceries.
A number of emergency medical squads -- among them Elkin Rescue, Dobson Rescue, Dobson Fire Department, Surry County Rescue and CC Camp Fire Department -- responded.
