In a pivotal game for conference positioning, things got ugly in a hurry for the Buckin' Elks, who lost at West Wilkes 7-1.
"West Wilkes scored in the first five minutes, and the rest of the game we tried to play catch up," McCulloch said. "The bottom line is West Wilkes stepped up in a very important game and we did not."
The Elks had beaten West soundly in the first meeting in Elkin. For now, though, West Wilkes (10-4-1 conference) slides past the Elks (9-4-2) in the Northwest 1A standings.
Elkin, West, Mount Airy and South Stokes all are battling for second place behind undefeated Bishop McGuinness in the final days of the conference regular season.
Elkin visits South Stokes to close its Northwest 1A slate on Thursday. South Stokes had a 9-4-1 Northwest 1A record heading into its Tuesday night match against East Surry.
If Elkin loses Thursday, it is in jeopardy of sliding to fifth place in the conference, which puts McCulloch's team on the bubble for even making the 1A playoffs.
Andrew Steiner had Elkin's lone goal Tuesday, booting in a shot from about 25 yards out. West Wilkes led 3-1 at halftime.
"West Wilkes, I think will be in second place," McCulloch said. "Our match Thursday with South Stokes is another important game for us and South in terms of where we finish."
EAST WILKES 3, ALLGHANY 1: The Cardinals improved to 5-9 in the Northwest 1A and 5-11 overall with Tuesday's victory.
East hosts Starmount in a non-conference game tonight.
