Mable Ruth Parsons


Mable Ruth Parsons, age 69, of 291 Ballpark Road, Sparta, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of the late James and Lockie Medley.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Dean Parsons and Seabert Parsons, and one brother, Russ Stikes.

She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law; Lonnie Parsons of Sparta; Ronnie and Tammy Parsons of Ennice; Tim and Sondra Parsons of Sparta; Junior and Louise Parsons of Elkin; Terry Parsons of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law; Diann and Mitch Bare of Crumpler; Jane and Robert Wood of Elkin; Sue and John Choate of Glade Valley; Roxanne and Terry Arnold of Ennice; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters and brother-in-law's; Bonnie Parsons of Sparta; Virginia and James Parsons of Sparta; Carrie Mullis of Sparta; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008 at 3 p.m. at the West Side Independent Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the services. The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. today at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta.

Ollie Gray Porter


Mr.Ollie Gray Porter, 65, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Porter was born May 1, 1943 to the late John and Florence Porter of East Bend.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, James and Paul Porter of Winston-Salem.

Ollie retired from Siemens-Westinghouse after 30 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, Jeffrey(Anjanette) and Andrew Porter; sisters, Hallie Callands; Vestor Porter; Mamie (Ricky) Miller;; Lola (Larry) Glenn; and Shelia (Michael) Sales, brothers, Bill (Mildred) Porter and Harrison (Stephanie) Porter. Also surviving are an aunt, Lillian Satterfield, and uncle, Burley Carter, both of Boonville, and mother-in-law, Ruth B. Burgess.

Funeral servive will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008 at the First Baptist Church, Jonesville. The Rev. Ralph Shipp will officiate and interment will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will recieve friends from 6 - 8 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, Jonesville. Viewing will be at Douthit's from 2 - 4 p.m. today.

The family would like to extend a special acknowledgement to Mr. Porter's "running buddies," Dewitt Shaffner, Greg Pardue, Ivey Poplin, John Cook and Interstate Exxon "crew."

The family would also like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the caring nurses and staff of Forsyth Medical Center.
